General Dentist

A regular dentist, also called a general dentist, focuses on everyday oral health and the maintenance of the teeth. Most of a general dentist’s work revolves around preventative care through regular cleanings and patient instructions for in-home oral care. General dentists also perform restorative treatment with procedures like whitening, repairing chips and cracks, and placing artificial fillings.

Endodontists are dentists who have completed specialized certification in the field of endodontics and focus on caring for and preserving the tissues within and around the teeth. Proper endodontic treatment can help preserve a patient’s natural teeth by removing diseased pulp that develops from trauma, gum disease, infection, or other causes.

A periodontist specializes in the health and treatment of the gums, focusing on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease like gingivitis. Periodontists may also place dental fillings and perform cosmetic skin grafting treatments to gum tissue. They routinely work with dentists to provide preventative treatment plans to patients.

When a patient has damaged, missing, or decayed teeth, a prosthodontist will be the one to provide oral prosthetics such as bridges, crowns, and tooth implants. Prosthodontists also perform veneer applications and will ensure patients can bite and chew effectively with their new dental prosthetics.

Oral Surgeon

Maxillofacial and oral surgeons specialize in the treatment of the hard and soft tissues in the face around the mouth. These professionals typically perform more invasive treatments than other dental health professionals. They often work with the cheeks, tongue, gums, lips, hard palate, and soft palate. Patients who need procedures like cleft palate repairs, complex tooth extractions, or surgical jaw corrections will likely see oral surgeons for treatment.

Although the internal anatomy of the maxillary central incisor is well known and usually presents with one root and a relatively simple root canal system, a second root with a separate root canal was located, treated and the patient’s symptoms were eliminated.
